Finding Jesus in 2017
Topic: New Year Passage: Matthew 2:1–2:3
You might find it curious that a message on the New Year would begin with a verse on the Christmas story. However, isn’t that where it all begins? For most Christians, this week is nostalgia time. We remember our childhood Christmas—the family traditions, trees, presents, parties—and we usually look back on those distant years as particularly happy.
We probably do the same thing as we think about the first Christmas. We think of it as beautiful family time—for Mary, Joseph and the child—and we may even glamorize the visit by the Magi.
But, of course, it was not a good time. The age that witnessed the birth of Jesus Christ was a bad age, and it is against the evil background of these days that the wonder of the coming of Jesus and the discovery of him by the Magi should be seen.
